Brazil's Supreme Court has unexpectedly blocked a New Jersey man's attempt to bring his 9-year-old son home. David Goldman flew to Rio yesterday planning to pick up son Sean and end a 5-year international custody dispute, after an appeals court ruled in his favor. But a justice on the top court blocked the transfer, ruling that Sean must express his own wishes in court. The full court could overrule the decision, but if it doesn't act this weekend, the case will be in limbo until February, when the court comes back from holiday break.
“I’ve been down this road before,” Goldman told the Today show. "I’ve been right here in front of this camera with the same view behind me, discouraged, disappointed, but no less determined to save my son.” Five years ago Sean's mother took him to Brazil, where she divorced Goldman and remarried. Since she died last year, he's been cared for by his Brazilian family, who claim the boy wants to continue to live with them.
