Maddy Cops: We Goofed
Kate and Gerry McCann, parents of missing toddler Madeleine, walk to mass at their local Catholic church, the Sacred Heart in Rothley, England, Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007. The family of missing 4-year-old Madeleine McCann said Saturday it was planning a 80,000 pound (US$160,000, 115,000) advertising campaign...   (Associated Press)

Portuguese police believe that early mistakes in the Madeleine McCann case have crippled their investigation, a source has told the Observer. Police are now unified in suspecting Maddy's parents in her disappearance, but it will be nearly impossible to bring charges against them due to lack of evidence. Part of the problem stems from cops initially focusing on a suspect who turned out to be a red herring.

The same source revealed that the McCanns offered changing and contradictory stories about what happened soon after Maddy disappeared. Even if law enforcement officials are unable to bring a charge of homicide against the parents, they may try to bring a lesser charge such as child neglect, he said. (More Madeleine McCann stories.)
