Editor & Publisher and Kirkus Reviews will shut down after the Nielsen Company today sold off most of its other magazine properties—including Billboard and the Hollywood Reporter—to a new media consortium. Nielsen spun the move as a chance “to strengthen investment in our core businesses,” reports Business Insider. But the loss of the prominent trade publications shook the publishing industry.

The 108-year-old E&P is "the industry bible of newspapering," True/Slant observes, and the eBookNewser blog describes the shuttering of Kirkus as "a big blow." Other publications sold to e5 Global Media Holdings include Brandweek, Mediaweek, Backstage, and Adweek, which broke the story. Nielsen said it will “continue to assess the strategic fit of our remaining portfolio of publications.” (More The Nielsen Co stories.)
