George Stephanopoulos is in negotiations to replace Diane Sawyer on ABC's Good Morning America, reports Howard Kurtz. While the network has offered him the job, it's not yet clear if he'll take it—Stephanopoulos is pushing to change the show to suit his preference for hard news. He also wants to hang on to his Sunday This Week post for a while. The talks face a deadline: Sawyer begins hosting the evening news on Dec. 21.

The offer to Stephanopoulos comes at a time when the network already is adding more hard news to GMA and replacing cooking and fashion segments with spots on consumer news, writes Kurtz in the Washington Post. Still, if Stephanopoulos does not accept the job, ABC has another contender in Chris Cuomo, GMA's news anchor.
