France, Hungary Take Gitmo Detainees

Two more detainees were released from Guantanamo Bay prison last night, marking incremental progress in the Justice Department's goal of closing the facility. Sabir Lahmar, an Algerian, was handed over to French authorities after having been found "innocent of any charges relating to the involvement in potential terrorist activities," officials said. The Hungarian government accepted a Palestinian detainee whose identity they kept confidential for security reasons.

Earlier yesterday, two other detainees were transferred from Gitmo to the custody of the Italian government. Abel Ben Mabrouk bin Hamida Boughanmi and Mohammed Tahir Riyadh Nasseri, both of Tunisia, face prosecution in Italy for providing support to terrorists and smuggling rings. After those moves, 211 detainees remain, ABC News reports. More than 500 have been released since 2002.
