Who says older women don't belong in Hollywood? Meryl Streep, who appears on the January cover of Vanity Fair, proves that bit of conventional wisdom—and others—dead wrong. Need evidence? "Mamma Mia! has grossed $601 million worldwide, despite some cringe-worthy reviews (for the movie, not its much-lauded heroine)," Leslie Bennetts writes. The Devil Wears Prada earned more than $300 million.
Other stereotypes Streep has managed to shrug off:
- It's all downhill after 40. Not so for Streep. "It’s incredible—I’m 60, and I’m playing the romantic lead in romantic comedies," says the actress, who stars with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin in It's Complicated, out in December.
- Talented actors should stick to dramatic roles. Streep has a lighter side, but she still does her homework. She "read everything about Julia Child, she played the cooking tapes over and over," Julie & Julia director Nora Ephron says.
