White House Counsel's Fall Should Worry Obama's Loyal

White House counsel Greg Craig's "death by a thousand leaks" should alarm anybody who's tied their political fortune to the president's and hopes for loyalty in return, writes Maureen Dowd. Craig cut his ties to close friend Hillary Clinton to help Obama get elected just a year ago and now finds himself cut loose over the administration's failure to close Gitmo by January—while Clinton serves as Obama's right-hand woman, Dowd writes in the New York Times.

The failure to back Craig recalls Obama's failure to do anything to help Caroline Kennedy when she was "being dragged through the mud" over her Senate hopes. Dowd wonders if Craig, and UN Ambassador Susan Rice, who helped undermine Clinton's foreign policy credentials last year, would have been so quick to turn on her "if they had known that Obama can often be more interested in wooing opponents than tending to those who put themselves on the line for him."
