President Obama would do well to give Stanley McChrystal more troops in Afghanistan, Army chief of staff George Casey said on Meet the Press today. "We have already made progress, and I would look for that progress to continue,” Casey said, without saying how many troops he thought were needed. He also warned of anti-Muslim backlash in wake of the Fort Hood shootings, reports Politico. "As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well," he told State of the Union.
Elsewhere on the Sunday dial:
- Saying Fort Hood "was an attack on American troops," Joe Lieberman told Fox News Sunday that he would conduct an investigation to see if the Army "missed warning signs."
- Republicans were chortling over Tuesday's elections, with RNC chair Michael Steele saying, "Call Speaker Boehner Speaker Boehner now 'cause it's gonna happen."
- Virginia's governor elect, Bob McDonnell, denied Obama's popularity had anything to do with his win: "I ran on Virginia issues, kitchen table issues. That's what got people to support our campaign." McDonnell added that he'd look for common ground with Obama on health issues, but given an opt-in or opt-out clause on the public option: "My preference would be not to have Virginia participate."
