Maj. Nidal Hasan cleaned out his off-base apartment in the days before yesterday’s shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas, giving away many of his possessions to a neighbor, whom he told he was headed for Iraq and had no need of them. Patricia Villa tells the New York Times she got an air mattress, shelves, even frozen vegetables and a Koran from Hasan.

Hasan called another neighbor at 5 yesterday morning to thank him “for being a good friend and thank him for being there for him,” the man’s girlfriend tells AP. The manager of the apartment building says Hasan, 39, also refused to take back his security deposit, wanting it instead to go to someone in need.
