The Weekly Standard is beating up on Nancy Pelosi for backing out of her promise, made to a Standard reporter in September, to put the final House health care bill online 72 hours before it’s voted on. With the vote expected tomorrow, It seems Pelosi and the Standard have different definitions of “final.” Pelosi’s office says it meant the version with the manager’s amendments—those agreed to before it goes to the floor.
But the Standard complains that House members will still be introducing and negotiating potentially important amendments less than 24 hours before the vote. Odds are that few, if any, up-or-down votes on individual amendments will be allowed, so many of the last-minute amendments will be adopted in a group, in a hurry. (More Nancy Pelosi stories.)
