Two Chicago men have been charged with conspiring to attack the Danish newspaper that enraged many Muslims by printing cartoons of Mohammed in 2005. Suspect Daniel Coleman Headley, a US citizen who grew up in Pakistan, has "very extensive contacts with leading militant extremists in Pakistan," an official said, and traveled to Denmark twice this year researching plans to attack the Jyllands-Posten paper and kill cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.

The plan—codenamed the "Mickey Mouse Project"—was hatched in collaboration with an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group in Pakistan, reports the New York Times. Investigators in the US and Denmark say that the plan was serious, but not imminent. Headley and the other man, a fellow graduate of a Pakistani military school who is accused of providing material support to terrorism, are in federal custody. (More Jyllands-Posten stories.)
