Diane Sawyer's impending departure for ABC's evening news leaves two top contenders for her post at Good Morning America: George Stephanopoulos and Chris Cuomo. Stephanopoulos has the edge, writes Howard Kurtz, because he's got the bigger name and has performed well as host of This Week. But he has one big strike: He's not so good with the light stuff, the bread and butter of morning TV.

Cuomo, meanwhile, is already "comfortable" in the morning ensemble as GMA's news anchor, writes Kurtz at the Washington Post. He does both hard and soft news well and—no small thing—has good rapport with Sawyer's co-host, Robin Roberts. If the network goes with Stephanopoulos, it's possible Cuomo and Roberts will leave, the latter because she won't enjoy watching her new co-host grab all the choice interviews.
