An al-Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for bombings that claimed more than 50 lives in Algeria in the last two days. The group, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, took credit for the attacks in an Internet statement , BBC reports. An explosives-laden truck drove into a naval barracks in a port city yesterday, killing 28 Algerian coast guard officers.

Two days earlier, a man killed more than 20 people when he blew himself up in a crowd awaiting the arrival of the Algerian president. The group’s admission comes as little surprise to regional observers, who note that the recent suicide attacks bear typical al-Qaeda characteristics. Similar bombings left more than 30 dead in Algiers in April. (More Algeria stories.)
