Alaska Democrats Complain of Palin Email Cover-Up

Democrats have been waiting more than a year for officials to release the thousands of Sarah Palin’s emails, and they’re starting to get suspicious. “I think they’re hiding something, I think this is a travesty of justice,” says the state’s Democratic Party chairwoman. “The law says they have 10 days to do it.”

Alaska law does indeed give the state 10 days to release public records, but officials can extend the deadline for complicated requests; the Democrats' requests—others come from news organizations seeking info on Troopergate and other issues—involve between 2,900 and 30,000 documents. “Unfortunately, it’s a very time-consuming process,” says the assistant attorney general. Documents can be withheld to protect individual privacy, or the “deliberative process.” (More Alaska stories.)
