German officials have arrested three suspected Islamic militants involved in a "massive" and "imminent" plot to bomb the Frankfurt Airport and the Ramstein Air Base, a U.S. and NATO military hub, the AP reported this morning. The men had gathered 1,500 lbs of hydrogen peroxide. "This would have enabled them to make bombs with more explosive power than the ones used in the London and Madrid bombings," says a German official.

The militants were said to have been planning to strike in a few days, possibly to coincide with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The suspects—two Germans and a Turk —have been under observation for some time, authorities said, and allegedly trained at a camp in Pakistan run by an extremist Sunni Muslim group.
