Charles Boustany, who was upstaged last night by the impromptu opposition from his colleague, Joe Wilson, delivered the official response to Obama's speech, opening with his "disappointment" that Obama hadn't announced a do-over in the effort to reform health insurance. “Most Americans, the Louisiana congressman said, wanted to hear the president say "it’s time to start over on a common-sense, bipartisan plan focused on lowering the cost of health care while improving quality.”
Boustany, a physician, chided Obama for refusing to drop the public option, and for not supporting a GOP plan to allow families and small businesses to buy insurance across state lines. He said Obama's support for experiments in medical liability reform was too timid. Critics noted that he was the defendant in at least three malpractice lawsuits in his 20 years of doctoring, and that he has, in the past, given some credence to the birther movement.
