Collins: For Once, I'm on Sarah Palin's Side

In Levi Johnston’s Vanity Fair interview, he says the Palin family is “much different” from a “normal family”—but maybe he’s not the best judge, given that he’s “a 19-year-old high school dropout whose mother was arrested on six felony drug counts,” writes Gail Collins in the New York Times. In fact, the piece had Collins feeling “sympathy” for Palin “for the first time in my life.”

“Levi’s reports on Palin’s failings as wife and mother sound exactly like what any self-absorbed teenager might say about his girlfriend’s working mom. She doesn’t cook! He and Bristol had to do everything!” The article could have been payback for Palin’s display of Levi and Bristol at the Republican convention—but Johnston "is untrustworthy about every subject not covered by Field & Stream." To get a better picture of the Palins, "we’re going to have to wait for a more reliable witness.”
