Now In Child's Old Kitchen, No Meat—or Butter!

The sacrilege! Not only has the kitchen in Julia Child’s former Cambridge home—familiar to millions of devotees of her show—been renovated to within an inch of its life, the Boston Globe reports, its new owners have hung a picture of a cow with the caption: “Nobody says when I grow up I want to be a hamburger.” That’s right: Lisa Landsverk and her family are vegetarians.

“It’s a bit ironic,” says Landsverk, an animal-rights activist. Even when convinced to depart from her usual menu (pasta, take-out style) to try out a few of Child’s recipes, Landsverk refuses to use butter out of deference to her vegan friends. Still, the result was edible—“It’s kind of good, but not that good,” decreed a daughter—and Child’s presence was palpable. “I think I overcooked the eggplant,” Landsverk said. “I wasn’t minding my heat like she said.” (More Julia Child stories.)
