Megrahi Knows 'Truth,' Wants Lockerbie Inquiry

Convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi has always maintained his innocence and now he wants an inquiry into the 1988 plane explosion that killed 270 people, the London Times reports. Megrahi claims to hold documents that could shed light on the real culprits and says that interest among the victims’ families runs high. “It would help them to know the truth,” he says. “The truth never dies.”

“If the UK guaranteed it, I would be very supportive,” says Megrahi, who is now dying of cancer in Libya. But he’s not hopeful. “My feeling is that the UK government will avoid a public inquiry because it would be a headache for them and the Americans, and it would show how much the Americans have been involved,” he says. “It would also cost them a lot of money which they may not want to spend because of the recession.” (More Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi stories.)
