Phillip and Nancy Garrido, the couple accused of kidnapping 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and holding her captive for 18 years, were charged today with 29 felony counts and the possibility of multiple life sentences if they're convicted, the Contra Costa Times reports. The charges include forcible rape, kidnapping, and false imprisonment by violence.

According to the charges filed, the 11-year-old was raped within a month of her abduction and through childhood, and Nancy Garrido was involved as well as Philip.  "We don't have to prove she physically did a rape," said a prosecutor. "All we have to prove is she aided and abetted with knowledge of the crime." Philip, Nancy, Jaycee, and the two girls she had with Garrido were spotted by security guards at UC Berkeley Tuesday, the paper reports, and an ID check turned up Garrido's sex offender status. His parole officer was notified, and Garrido was ordered to bring them all into the station, where their identity was revealed.
