Larry Craig will resign his Senate seat as soon as today, in an effort to pre-empt an official GOP call for him to step down, party sources tell CNN. Following the Idaho conservative’s guilty plea in a bathroom-stall sex sting, the Republican National Committee was preparing to call for his exit, CNN reports, but will hold off pending his decision to fall on his own sword.
A third Republican senator implied yesterday that Craig would be wise to resign; the Idaho Statesman ran a scathing editorial, saying the state cannot condone an official who commits a "lie by ommission," and cannot abide a senator who "provides fodder for bloggers and late-night talk show hosts." Polls show only one-third of Craig's constituents think he should stay on. (More Larry Craig stories.)
