So now Sarah Palin alleges that President Obama's "death panels" might have killed Trig had they been in place. "Where to start?" wonders Joan Walsh in Salon. "Palin's entire statement is so ignorant, so bollixed rhetorically and morally, it hurts to read it." Most "health care screamers are sadly uninformed," she writes. But unlike most, Palin was a candidate for vice president, which "shows the Republican Party has arrived at a point of abject shame."

The GOP is engaging in an anti-Obama campaign filled with "the most stupid and divisive lies we've seen in a long time," and the undercurrent of racism is unmistakable by some on the fringe. Walsh faults Democrats, who should have seen it coming, for being "flat-footed" in response. But, mostly, she blames the mainstream media (aside from a recent Steven Pearlstein column in the Post) for letting the lies slip by unchallenged, or at least watered down in a "lazy he-said-she-said" attempt at objectivity.
