A judge went easy yesterday on the Virginia man who pulled over to help geese cross a highway only to be slapped with a jaywalking ticket, the Washington Post reports. The judge said Jozsef Vamosi probably broke the law, but said he’d drop the case if the 60-year-old remained on good behavior. “I think I do what I have to do,” Vamosi shrugged. “That’s the way I was raised.”

The officer who ticketed Vamosi described seeing him “get out and actually chase the geese” across four lanes of traffic. “There were numerous vehicles. They had to slam on their brakes very hard. It almost caused a crash or a pileup.” When the officer told Vamosi to get out of the road, “He told me no, repeatedly. He told me he was trying to save the geese.” (More Virginia stories.)
