Like Twitter before it, Foursquare must be used before social network afficionados can understand how entertaining it is. Once they do, Foursquare could soon become the new Twitter, says Mashable.com. The location-based networking application not only helps friends meet up in key metro hubs, but it also mixes in "social gameplay." Users compete in city exploration games, and can eventually become a location's "virtual mayor."

Users can compete against their immediate Foursquare friends, or on a city-wide level with strangers. Even better, the application allows users to upload tips about each location, such as food or drink hotspots. As usage grows, these tips could become a real-time guidebook to any city. Foursquare also offers a seamless Twitter tie-in to tweet tips.
