Liddy Plays Birther Hardball

Nixon henchman G. Gordon Liddy branded Barack Obama an "illegal alien" on Hardball yesterday, dodging a barrage of evidence and documents cited by Chris Matthews that the US president was born in Hawaii. Liddy insisted that Obama's "invalid" birth certificate couldn't be used to get a passport or even "to register your son for Little League," despite Matthews' observation that it has been used for just those things.

But Liddy said he would "want to check it out," proudly joining the ranks of "birthers" who suspect fraud in the nation's first black president's claim to citizenship. Matthews sarcastically wondered how many people were in on "this conspiracy," which had to at least involve Obama's parents and grandparents. "Well," said Liddy, "his mother is dead."
