At least one person was killed and hundreds injured when a powerful 6.0 earthquake rocked China's Yunnan province yesterday evening, Bloomberg reports. Officials say 18,000 houses in the region have been destroyed and 75,000 other buildings damaged. Eight aftershocks hit as rescue teams and relief officials rushed to the quake zone with food, medicine, and tents.
"I was harvesting tobacco leaves in the farm when the quake hit. I felt dizzy and saw villagers falling over and many houses collapsed," one farmer told China's Xinhua news agency. "We were so helpless and hopeless until throngs of rescuers came." (More Yunnan stories.)
