London officially unveiled its memorial to the 52 people killed in the July 7, 2005, terror attacks today, the Guardian reports. The Hyde Park memorial consists of 52 stainless steel pillars, each representing a victim, split into four groups corresponding to the four bombing targets. In the center is a 1.4-ton steel plaque bearing the names of all the victims.
Prince Charles, who laid a wreath at the memorial, said it “fulfills a deeper need” and “offers a path to peace and healing.” Added the father of one of the victims: “To me, it sends out a clear message to bombers and terrorists—that no matter what they do, they just cannot win, because we value every single life.” (More Prince Charles stories.)
