Gov. Mark Sanford is at a South Carolina beach home with his wife and four sons today, his staff tells the AP. The married couple says a reconciliation is in the works despite Sanford’s confession yesterday to a yearlong affair with an Argentinean woman. The Republican—who may also face repercussions for disappearing without transferring his powers—has spent the past two days meeting officials and apologizing to staff.
“I think that South Carolinians, in particular Americans, have tremendous capacity for forgiveness. That said, they can also recognize hypocrisy. I think the tale of the tape will be the next few days, whether or not Gov. Sanford is sincere in his repentance,” says a state senator and longtime friend of Sanford.
