Oscar-winning songwriter Joseph Brooks turned himself in to New York police today on suspicion of rape, the Post reports. Six women have accused Brooks of casting-couch sexual assault under the pretense of auditioning for movie roles. Brooks won Best Original Song in 1977 for You Light Up My Life, from the film of the same name, which he wrote and directed.
The alleged rapes took place between 2006 and 2008, the Daily News adds. Some of the women say Brooks slipped them the date-rape drug, while others say the 70-year-old spiked their drinks. Insiders say Brooks will be charged today with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of sodomy. The allegations became public in January. (More crime stories.)
