The governor of Muthanna province was killed by a roadside bomb today—a little more than a week after another Iraqi governor was assassinated. Mohammed Ali al-Hassani's SUV was struck en route to his office in the morning. Police are blaming Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, which has clashed with the the rival Shiite party to which both governors belonged.

In more Shiite unrest, thousands demonstrated in Sadr City against the US presence, burning American flags and demanding an end to US and Iraqi forces raiding homes of suspected militia members. A bomb on a motorcycle also killed at least three people in a crowded market in Baghdad today. (More Iraq stories.)
