Scientists are developing a bulletproof turban that would allow Britain’s Sikh police officers to handle firearms and become riot cops, the Telegraph reports. The religion requires men keep their turbans on at all times, barring them from wearing helmets required in certain high-risk scenarios. “There needs to be a recognition from the Home Office that would allow Sikh officers to carry out these roles,” an advocate said.

“The Government wants a police service that reflects the diverse communities it serves,” the Home Office said. But “it is down to individual forces to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate the religion or beliefs of individual officers.” There are more than 2,000 Sikh police officers in the UK. The turban under development would be made of a Kevlar-like fabric to protect the head from gunshots. (More England stories.)
