6 Globe Unions Cut Deal; Largest Remains

Under threat of closure from the New York Times Co., six of the Boston Globe's seven unions have hammered out tentative deals with management, agreeing to millions in concessions, reports the Globe. But the newspaper's largest union, the Boston Newspaper Guild, is taking a break from negotiations following what the Globe terms a "marathon bargaining session" which resulted in "substantial progress."

The Guild had offered $10 million in concessions, including a 3.5% pay cut for most of its 600 editorial, advertising, and business office employees. But it did not concede changes to job guarantees. “It’s the same bullying and pressure tactics. We remain here in good faith," says the Guild president. Management's chief negotiator says plans to file a 60-day notice of Times Co's intent to close the Globe are shelved "at this moment." (More Boston Globe stories.)
