Thanks to the economy, the peanut scare, and ugly winter weather, Girl Scout cookie sales are down 20% nationwide this year, the Boston Herald reports. Key programs are in danger of being cut, but the spirit of the young troopers is undimmed. “Not a lot of people on my street have breaks” at work, one youngster said. “I figure they can at least eat cookies.”
“There were a lot of contributing factors,” said the director of Eastern Massachusetts’ Girl Scouts. “The economy has really had an impact, and God gave me peanut butter and really miserable weather. We’re reaching out to the public to say, ‘Please, reach deep into your pockets and your hearts because this impacts the young women leaders of the future.’” (More Girl Scout cookies stories.)
