4 Oakland Cops Shot, Critically Injured

Four officers were in critical condition tonight and a suspect dead after gunfire at a traffic stop in Oakland led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout. Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1pm after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland. He then fled on foot, and police found him in barricaded building about 3:30pm. When SWAT officers stormed the building, a shootout ensued.

The suspect was killed during the exchange, and two more officers wounded. Dozens of people, including other officers gathered outside their hospital awaiting word of their colleagues' condition. "At this point we don't believe there are other people involved, but it's too early to tell," said the acting police chief. Tension between police and the community has escalated since the New Year's Day fatal shooting of an unarmed man by a transit police officer. (More Oakland stories.)
