Six people are feared trapped in a coal mine in Huntington Canyon, Utah, after a possible earthquake caused a cave-in today at 2:48am. The miners were working 4 miles from the entrance when the mine collapsed an hour later; rescue teams are now within 2,500 feet of their location, federal mine safety officials tell the Deseret News.

"At this point all we know is six unaccounted for and trapped in the mine," said the Emery County sheriff. The miners are 1,500 feet below ground, ABC News reports, and rescuers have not been able to make contact. Researchers are determining whether a seismic event reported early today was an earthquake or a vibration that originated in the mine. (More mine stories.)
