The Cowboys dropped the guillotine on Terrell Owens late last night, ESPN reports, in a bid to improve locker room morale. Jerry Jones decided to release the notorious wide receiver yesterday after most of his staff had left for the day. Owens is just one year into a 4-year deal, and the Cowboys will take a $9 million salary cap hit for cutting him.
Owens wore out his welcome last year by constantly criticizing offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, and nearly coming to blows with tight end Jason Witten. So far, the team has no official comment, and a spokesman for Owens said the star hadn’t gotten the news yet. (More Terrell Owens stories.)
