Vanity Fair's Naked Spoof Not So Funny

Vanity Fair reproduced its controversial cover featuring a naked ScarJo and Keira Knightley—with men. But the results are more irritating than avant garde, writes Tracy Clark-Flory on Salon: The men, a quartet of Judd Apatow favorites, are more silly than sexy. They’re not actually naked, just clothed in beige body suits. And the shot isn’t even on the cover: "Way to be edgy, Vanity Fair!"

Worried that her intrinsic dislike of Apatow’s brand of humor was biasing her, Clark-Flory asked her colleagues to weigh in. The consensus was unanimous: The gag is an “epic fail” in terms of humor; it highlights Hollywood’s double standard for male versus female beauty; photographer Annie Leibovitz has sunk pretty low; but—perhaps most importantly—“ an unbuttoned Paul Rudd is never an entirely unwelcome image.”
