Broncos outside linebacker Warrick Holdman suffered a concussion of his spinal cord during yesterday's training session. The 31-year-old's helmet struck running back Mike Bell during a scrimmage, and Holdman was taken to a nearby medical center for overnight observation. Denver coach Mike Shanahan says the hospital stay is a routine precaution.

The injury comes at a particularly bad time for Holdman, who signed a 1-year contract with the Broncos on April 26; he's currently battling with D.D. Lewis and Nate Webster for the starting role on the strong side. "We're hoping for the best," Shanahan said yesterday. Bell was not injured in the collision. (More Denver Broncos stories.)
