Ky. Deploys National Guard for Ice Storm Relief

Kentucky has deployed 4,600 of its National Guard troops to go door-to-door in what the state's governor is calling "the biggest natural disaster that this state has ever experienced in modern history.” At least seven—and as many as 21—people may have died as a result of a massive ice storm this week, CNN reports; 400,000 are still without electricity.

"Devastation is sometimes an overused word, but I would say that's what we had,” one mayor said. Some 92 of the state’s 120 counties have declared emergencies, and National Guard troops are checking on families to make sure they are relatively safe. Meanwhile, loose trees continue to pose a threat. The "overall power of the branches falling was actually pretty frightening," one Louisville resident said.
