Elisabeth Fritzl was released today from the psychiatric institution where she has been hospitalized since being discovered in April, the Guardian reports. Recuperating with her at the hospital, and also released today, were the six surviving children fathered by Josef Fritzl, who is imprisoned awaiting trial on charges of rape and enslavement in addition to the murder of one of the children he had with his daughter.
Elisabeth Fritzl and her children were taken to a secret location and will soon assume new identities. Just days before the discharge, police announced that they had a diary kept by Elisabeth, which they intend to use as evidence against her father. The diary corroborates key events in her 24-year imprisonment, including the birth of her children. Josef Fritzl's trial is scheduled to begin in March. (More Josef Fritzl stories.)
