Yankees officials are confident that pitcher CC Sabathia will sign with the team, the New York Times reports. The seven-year, $160 million deal is the priciest ever for a pitcher. Yankees GM Brian Cashman recently met twice with Sabathia in Las Vegas and again yesterday in San Francisco. Sabathia had reportedly wanted to play in California, but no offers emerged.
The original offer, $140 million for six years, was made just last month. Sabathia’s current team, the Milwaukee Brewers, made a stab at keeping him with a $100 million, five-year deal, but they couldn’t match the Yankees’ purchasing power. After final contract negotiations, Sabathia will take a physical and officially join the team.
