A House ethics committee broadened its probe into Charles Rangel over concerns the New York Democrat fought a tax loophole in exchange for a $1 million donation to his policy institute. The subcommittee has been investigating Rangel’s personal finances since September over several other corruption allegations; now, it looks like the probe may stretch into Congress’ next term, Politico reports.
The New York Times reported that Rangel met with donor Eugene Isenberg the day his Ways and Means Committee was studying a tax bill that would affect Isenberg’s firm. Isenberg wanted confirmation Rangel wouldn’t support the measure, the Times said; the same day, the two had discussed Isenberg’s contribution. Both men say there’s no connection between the donation and Rangel’s opposition to the bill. (More Congress stories.)
