An Iraqi reporter in the New York Times Baghdad bureau was shot and killed today on his way to work. Khalid Hassan, 23, is the second Iraqi Times employee and the 110th journalist killed in Iraq since 2003. Bureau chief John F. Burns described Hassan, a  4-year Times veteran, as "a resourceful and brave member of our news team."

“Khalid was family,” said executive editor Bill Keller. His death came a day after two Iraqi Reuters employees were killed in a firefight between American troops and Shiite militias in Baghdad. The Times reports that Hassan notified the bureau he would be late 30 minutes before he called his mother, with whom he lived, to tell her he'd been shot. (More Iraq stories.)
