All Chinese products containing milk will be blocked at the US border until tests prove they're free of a widely used toxic contaminant, Bloomberg reports. The FDA is demanding independent testing to prove such products are not tainted with melamine like those which sickened 50,000 children in China. The chemical was first discovered in infant milk powder but has since been found in many other products containing milk.
Candy, snacks, bakery products and pet food from China are among the products that will be affected. Specific products known to have been contaminated with melamine are already banned. "This is simply an expansion,'' said an FDA associate commissioner. "We were finding more and more categories of dairy-containing products.'' (More China stories.)
