While two of Wall Street's top women—Morgan Stanley’s Zoe Cruz and Citigroup’s Sallie Krawcheck—fell from grace this year, the global economic storm has pushed several others, like the FDIC’s Sheila Bair and Bank of America’s Barbara Desoer to the top of the Wall Street Journal's 2008 50 Women to Watch list. Just 2.4% of Fortune 500 companies have a woman at the helm, but the Journal notes an increase in women on key hiring committees.

The top 5:

  1. Sheila Bair, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
  2. Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo
  3. Barbara Desoer, Bank of America
  4. Hu Xiaolian, People's Bank of China
  5. Christine LaGarde, French finance minister
