Neighbors are accusing a Los Angeles County assistant fire chief of beating their puppy so badly that she had to be put down, KTLA reports. Glynn Johnson attacked the dog for no reason, they say, pummeling it with a rock and trying to break its jaws. Johnson told superiors he battled the dog in self-defense. Riverside County deputies are investigating.
With sufficient evidence, the case could prompt the district attorney to press an animal cruelty charge, which is a felony. An online bio describes Johnson's sterling 30-year career, but the dog's owners say he has a history of violence. "How can any human being just murder a puppy for no reason?" said dogowner Shelley Toole as she fought back tears. "I just think he's an evil person."
