One Arizona poll indicates that the presidential race is within 2 percentage points in John McCain’s home state, the Arizona Republic reports. McCain leads 46% to 44%, but the 3-point margin of error makes the race a toss-up, according to the Arizona State University poll. Republicans have an edge on Democrats in registered voters in Arizona, but the large pool of independents is going overwhelmingly for Obama.
“One would think McCain would still carry Arizona,” a pollster said, “but anybody who says they can predict the state this time, they can't.” Other polls are not as tight as the ASU one, but all indicate a tightening race. At one point, McCain had double-digit leads in the state. But the McCain camp remains confident. “John McCain has never lost an election in Arizona, and this one will be no different,” a spokesman said. (More Election 2008 stories.)
