Windows Vista may be clunky, but Stephen Williams is sick of hearing complaints about it. He runs down six easy ways to make Vista more bearable in the New York Times:
- Turn off the user account control feature. Windows will finally stop asking your permission to do everything.
- Add memory. Microsoft says you need 512mb of Ram. Don’t believe it. Get a couple gigs.
- Plug in a flash memory device to boost performance. You won't need to mess with installing RAM, and you'll only fork over about $25.
- Turn off random features. You’re probably wasting memory on crap like the “Windows DFS Replication Service.” Turn ‘em off in the Uninstall a Program tab of the Control Panel.
- Ugly it up. All those pretty widgets and transparent items slow Windows down.
