Meta's smart glasses got a courtroom reality check this week. A Los Angeles judge sharply warned members of Mark Zuckerberg's team on Wednesday after they showed up to a high-profile trial wearing the camera-equipped eyewear, reports CBS News. "The judge upbraided the Meta team and said if you guys have recorded anything, you have to dispose of it or I will hold you in contempt," tech journalist Jacob Ward, host of the Rip Current Podcast, tells the outlet. Ward called it "an extraordinary misstep" by Meta.
Recording devices are generally barred in LA County Superior Court, and members of the team escorting Zuckerberg into the building were seen wearing the Ray-Ban devices, notes CNBC. Judge Carolyn Kuhl ordered anyone wearing AI glasses to remove them, adding that any attempt to use facial recognition on jurors is prohibited. "This is very serious," she said. Meta, whose glasses sell for $299 to $799, did not immediately comment. Zuckerberg was in court to testify in a case accusing Meta and Google's YouTube of intentionally building features that foster compulsive use among minors.
