John McCain knows that running mate Sarah Palin isn’t ready to be president, which is why the campaign is hiding her away and bullying journalists who investigate her, EJ Dionne argues in the Washington Post. She has yet to respond to any “serious questioning” since being nominated, a sign “McCain’s advisers clearly don’t trust Palin to answer questions.”

As part of its “war on the media,” Dionne notes, the McCain campaign has asked reporters to treat Palin with deference. “When,” he asks, “have McCain, Obama, Biden or, for that matter, Hillary Clinton asked for deference?” Dionne concludes, “The actions of McCain's lieutenants suggest that they know the answer” to questions about Palin’s readiness. “And they are doing everything they can to keep the media from finding it.” (More John McCain stories.)
